The importance of strategic placement of public squares within a spatial layout
A public space has a relationship between its location, layout and the elements which contribute to its purpose and liveliness.
Considering and applying the following fine-grain principles when designing open spaces will improve the quality and viability of a space and generate public life.
- Strategic placement of public space in response to its context, to generate new activity and facilitate existing activity.
- Integrated spaces, events and activities create an interesting and memorable public realm.
- Integrate public space into public transport interchanges to capture commuter activity
- Focal connection between surrounding destination points and retail anchors to integrate pedestrian movements and activity
- An interactive focal point reinforces the space and physical presence
- Fluidity of pedestrian movement within the public space
Understanding the context of an area can allow public spaces to naturally thrive. Co-locating open spaces, plazas, parklets or pockets of activity close to anchors, transport and destinations will determine its success.
Application of a set of finer-grain principles to old, new or when renewing public spaces fundamentally creates better spaces for Sydneysiders to use.
