A world class setting deserves a world class public space

Imagine a place, once devoted to cars and seen by many as an eye-sore, becoming a much-loved pedestrian and cycling precinct, allowing active, healthy and enjoyable connections from east to west across the city and north to south across the harbour. An asset that includes cafes, bars and retail spaces amongst the landscaped open space, celebrating the best of our harbour city.

Stage 3 expands the pedestrian area to become 17 metres wide, providing 8,500m2 of pedestrian space with room for more permanent dining venues. Vehicles are excluded entirely.

The Cahill expressway loop under Observatory Hill becomes available for the exclusive use of pedestrians and cyclists. A small new tunnel through to Kent Street allows access through Millers Point to Barangaroo in the west, linking up with the new Metro line.

The legible connection from east to west provides an opportunity for Sydneysiders and tourists to take a looping walk across the Harbour Bridge, over or under the Cahill Express to finish in either the Royal Botanic Gardens or at the foot of the Sydney Opera House.

The Cahill Expressway, built to celebrate the car, will now celebrate the city, uniting the best of its public spaces from east to west and north to south.
