Sydney is Australia’s largest and most dynamic urban economy. An urban network of places and districts, centres and clusters that nurture the businesses, institutes, ideas and innovations that will drive tomorrow’s economy.

Sydney is a city where innovation has long thrived but is often absent from the stories we tell the world about who we are. The emergence of photovoltaic technologies; the birth of wi-fi; the HQ for homegrown businesses from fintech and SaaS unicorns to global med-tech giants and quantum innovators. Until now, the picture of Sydney as an innovation city has existed only in pieces. We have lacked an overarching view of where Sydney’s research specialises, where its innovation assets sit, where its industries cluster, and where ideas and businesses go to grow.

This document changes that.

For the first time, Sydney’s innovation places – its districts, precincts, centres and institutions – have been mapped together across multiple sectors, as one connected ecosystem. The picture that emerges is bigger, deeper and more distributed than most realise. Together, it forms something greater than the sum of its parts: a world-class innovation ecosystem that spans every priority industry and every stage of the journey from idea to global company.
