Eamon Waterford, CEO of the Committee for Sydney:
“Sydney is in a generational housing crisis.
“We must plan to solve this crisis, and planning with vision and clarity – and the right level of process – is essential to delivering the city we want.
“The planning system we have today has created headaches for communities, councils and developers alike. Too often, good projects for housing, infrastructure and economic development are caught in a maze that can run through as many as 22 agencies.
“We now have an opportunity to simplify and better coordinate these pathways so the best ideas move forward faster, communities see the benefits sooner, and investment flows where it’s needed most.
“The problem is that the system can overcomplicate minor projects, while offering inadequate certainty on critical issues like climate risk, liveability and infrastructure alignment.
“These reforms aim to right-size assessment to the scope of projects, and for the first time bring climate resilience into planning decisions.
“While we will work through the detail to understand the full impact of the reforms, we welcome the NSW Government’s commitment to unlocking the housing and infrastructure our city so urgently needs.”
