Estelle Grech, planning policy manager, Committee for Sydney:

“This pattern book is the perfect companion to the government’s low and mid-rise policy, it’s planning reform that people can see. It’s proof that density can be both beautiful and attainable.

“Where the low and mid-rise policy creates opportunity, the pattern book ensures quality. It isn’t an abstract rezoning, it’s practical, design-led guidance that shows how you can get more bang from your block, build beautiful homes and help solve Sydney’s housing crisis.

“The accelerated pathways means anyone can take one of these fantastic designs on a Friday and be ready start building by the following weekend. This will deliver density, done beautifully, anywhere, immediately.

“These designs nod to Sydney’s iconic 19th-century terraces but are built for 21st century life. They’re light-filled, have plenty of fresh air, and are thoughtfully designed to provide beautiful homes for families.

“While these designs may not appear everywhere overnight and are more likely to be a slow burn, they set a strong benchmark for what’s possible when it comes to low-rise development.

“Even if these designs don’t take off overnight, they set a strong benchmark for what’s possible when it comes to building higher density housing, in low-rise suburban streets.”
